Jessica got her start in historical recreation in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in 2017, and was quickly recruited to work in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She served as the first full-term corporate DEI Officer for the SCA and continues to educate within the community. Professionally, Jessica’s background as a technical writer specializing in procedural and policy documentation has assisted in constructing inclusive, modern language updates to organizational documents.

In this discussion, we’ll identify some of the different ways that cultures interact, including cultural appreciation, exchange, assimilation, and the problematic appropriation. We’ll talk about why cultural appropriation is so harmful, in both a modern and historical recreation context, and explore some ways of self-evaluating and addressing our own behavior to avoid it.
