A picture of LaKase. They are facing the camera and smiling brightly. Their face is framed by thick, black curls. They are wearing a grey turtleneck sweater under a light turquoise organza wrap top with puffy sleeves and bright blue jeans.

LaKase Cousino is an author, filmmaker, and historian with a passion for fantastical stories told from diverse perspectives. She is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Seelie Crow magazine, a Fantasy culture magazine dedicated to uplifting voices that have not traditionally found space in the genre. Her scholarly areas of interest are Medieval Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula, particularly the rituals of those considered outsiders. She enjoys exploring the ways various cultures interacted during this period of exploration and exchange.

LaKase’s talk is titled “The Outsiders Who Redefined Beauty In The Middle Ages”:

The Silk Road provided an avenue for people of color from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Minor to break into the beauty, health, and artistic spaces, forever altering perceptions of aesthetic ideals. From concubines and eunuchs, to musicians and scholars, the people of Al-Andalus in modern day Spain defied their status in truly exciting ways.
