Let’s all agree to work on spoken and written microaggressions in the costuming community (including the SCA).

It is important to know that anti-racism is about behaviors, policies, and ideas that advance racial equity. We must not think that anti-racism is just about agreeing with certain perspectives.

What are they? Microaggresions are insults, indignities, and denigrating messages directed toward an individual because of their group membership. Microaggressions not only hurt; they harm someone’s ability to thrive and succeed. If we want people of color to stay in a community microaggressions need to STOP just as much as overt racist & racially biased statements, jokes, and messages.

Call in to your friends and acquaintances who engage in microaggressions. Let them know that its not ok and that a response of, “Oh you misheard me,” “I never meant that,” “It was just a joke,” and “Why are you so sensitive?” are also NOT OK.

Microaggressions are cumulatively death by a thousand cuts. They aim to cut you down, bit by bit, and make you feel like you are not worthy of a place that you have earned and/or a place that you belong.

Microaggressions are racist and hurtful. Be better, do better. I’ll put links below for those inclined to know more.
